My first Blog-iversary: Happy birthday Jet Lag and Jewels!! :)

Hey everyone!! So…here I am, sitting by the Christmas tree. It's about 3:00 in the morning here in Paris…and I can't help but feel incredibly happy: not only did I have a wonderful day at work, but today (well, it's after midnight, so technically yesterday) this blog turned 1 year old!! Yup, exactly 1 year ago, I sat gazing at the christmas tree lights, feeling sleepy and cosy…the house was quiet, everyone was asleep and it was completely peaceful. I was about to go to bed, when suddenly I realized that it was the perfect time to actually put into action something I had been thinking about for a long time…it was just the right moment. And so, instead of going to sleep, I got my laptop out and created Jet Lag and Jewels. :)
It's been a really fun, positive year of adventures, amazing projects and cool collaborations...I have met incredible people along the way and have found a great joy in sharing the things I do with all of you. The best days are when I get feedback: anything at all - a quick word, a thought, a question, a request - from a friend, a family member or from someone out there who has come to know me through the simple things that I write and the pictures I post. Jet Lag and Jewels is still taking on a life of it's own, but everything I post represents a part of me and, therefore, no matter how simple or seemingly random, it's all very personal. The most important thing I have come to realize in this year is that, no matter what you start out with (it really doesn't matter how big or how small), if you put yourself out there, positive, like-minded people and incredible opportunities will be attracted to you... All you have to do is start.
I thank each and every one of you who has taken the time to look at my posts and interact in any way - it means the world to me.
So here is to another year of all kinds of exciting new things! There are many adventures ahead - and this is only the beginning!

xx,

Victoria ;)
. . . . . .

Ciao a tutti!

Eccomi qui…seduta vicino all'albero di Natale.

xx,

Victoria ;)

First Mission: Cronuts in SoHo!

Hello friends! SO sorry I haven't written in such a long time! There has been A LOT of excitement lately between traveling for work, photo shoots, my sister's beautiful wedding in Paris and the beginning of another school year at university!! Things have been wonderfully crazy and I have so much to share with you! For those of you that follow me on Facebook you have already seen bits and pieces of where I've been and what I've been up to! If you don't already follow me on Facebook, please take a look at my page:
https://www.facebook.com/jetlagandjewels
If you like what you see, please click the like button! ;)

First of all, this is a very special post because it is (finally) my first  MISSION POST! A while back I asked you to send me e-mails with any questions you had about the main places I spend time in: New York, Paris and/or any cities in Italy, particularly cities within Tuscany. Basically anything you wanted to know about my personal experiences in those places and/or anything you wanted me to discover for you. I received the most wonderful e-mails from so many of you, which of course filled me with excitement! And so, during my recent time in New York, I went on some of the missions you gave me!
This first mission is upon request by Davide, from Florence,Italy:
Davide wrote to me requesting that I eat and critique a Cronut. My very first thought when I read his e-mail was "What on Earth is a Cronut??", so I immediately went online and began Googling. I discovered right away that it is a dessert…not just any dessert, but basically the Holy Grail of pastries! The creator of this sugary masterpiece is french pastry chef Dominique Ansel, and what he has done is create a sort of croissant-donut hybrid. There is so much hype around this dessert that it has actually become the most virally talked about dessert item in history! And no - I'm not joking!
Now, those of you who know me know that I have a major sweet tooth…so it didn't seem all that absurd to me when I found out that to snag one of these, I was going to have to wake up at 5 am! The bakery opens at 8 am, but it is suggested that one is in line by 7 am since the demand is so high and the lines get very long. It seemed like the perfect sugar-filled adventure - just my kind of thing! ;)

Of course I documented the whole adventure for you, Davide (and for everyone else reading this too!)…I hope you enjoy the pictures and that you too will be able to try a Cronut soon!

P.S. Upon arrival at the Dominique Ansel Bakery I discovered that the Cronut flavor changes monthly. I happened to be there for Bosch Pear and Sage (September)!!!

. . . . . .

Hello friends!
https://www.facebook.com/jetlagandjewels

5 am wake up call: sleepy, but excited!
Sveglia alle 5: assonnata, ma emozionata!

The adventure begins…we took the subway downtown (the bakery is on Spring st. in SoHo). Here I am on line!
Eccomi in fila!

I wasn't alone...Egidio came with me on this Cronut Mission :)

While we waited on line, a lady from the watermelon juice shop on the corner, dressed in a head-to-toe spandex watermelon outfit passed out samples of their product…it was sweet and delicious and a nice treat to have while we waited!

.

Yay!…we made it to the shop entrance!
Siamo riusciti ad arrivare all'ingresso!

As we made our way closer to the Cronut counter, we were able to admire the other sweets…

Through this window, inside the shop, it is possible to watch the Cronuts being made…

.

It was a beautiful day and we decided to sit in the small garden in the back of the bakery to try the Cronuts…also, they are meant to be eaten as immediately as possible as they are very perishable.

Moment of truth!!!
Il momento della verità!!!

The cream inside had quite a light consistency and flavor, which mixed perfectly with the sweetness of the Bosch pear and especially the aromatic flavor of the sage. I am not usually a huge fan of anything fried, but in this case the fried flavor didn't overwhelm the rest of the pastry. The outside was crispy and the inside was soft and flaky. Overall I thought it was quite delicious! In my opinion it should be enjoyed on its own and not as dessert after a meal, as it's quite a complex pastry, full of flavor and very filling!

We took two other desserts with us to have later in the day ;)

We tried (left) the Coco-Mango Riz Au Lait (coconut flavored rice pudding with mango pearls on top) and (right) the Lime Me Up Tart (with juniper-lime curd and a soft lime mousse). YUM!!!
Mmmm!!!

Thank you for the special treats Dominique Ansel…I'll be back to try more!! ;)

And a huge warm thank you especially to Davide, for sending me on this very fun and delicious mission!

Please continue to send me your questions and requests at: va.strickland@yahoo.com !!

P.S. The Cronut flavor of this month (October) is Pumpkin Chai (with maple sugar), which sounds quite incredible!!! If anyone gets a chance to try one, please let me know in the comment section below what you thought!!

This Is How it Starts: Tacoma Narrows' Debut Album!

Hello friends! I'm here today to tell you about Tacoma Narrows: a Harlem-based folk-rock band that has recently launched a Kickstarter campaign in order to raise $15,000 to put together their first album, "This Is How It Starts"! Not only does this sextet really know how to rock, but I love the way they have all come to know each other, one new friendship at a time, united by their common passion for music and a great zest to create something wonderful and unique. Each member of Tacoma Narrows brings something of his or her own to the band's over-all sound and image and the result is truly upbeat and glowing!
Tacoma Narrows is composed of Cheney Munson on guitar and vocals, Will Roble on drums, Jason Theobald on fiddle, Jim Bisbee on bass, Corrie Mathias on vocals and Luca del Puppo on mandolin and electric guitar.
Cheney is a former middle school English teacher, Will was a math teacher at the same school and is currently heading up a middle school math program for a network of schools throughout New York and Connecticut, Jason is a medical student, Jim is working on his PhD in Political Science and Corrie is also finishing up her studies. Luca, after years spent living in Florence, returned to the U.S. to play with different bands, opening for acts like The Strokes and Dickey Betts. For several years he focused on a career in the film industry as Director of Photography, but moved back to New York City to pursue his musical career.
Their start was at Paddy Reilly's Music Bar in 2010 and now you can hear them perform at venues all around New York, such as Stage 2 at Rockwood Music Hall and The Bowery Electric. I know I can't wait to see them live the next time I'm in NYC!! So what do you say everyone…should we make this album happen? I say DEFINITELY!!! Please check out their AWESOME Kickstarter video and make your contribution by pledging before August 1st at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1791699442/this-is-how-it-starts-tacoma-narrows-first-album
You can contribute any amount from $1 up and every bit makes a difference! Plus, they are offering all kinds of cool rewards to their backers! I just made my pledge, so now it's your turn to make yours and be a part of something wonderful! If you can't contribute, sharing the link with friends and family would be a HUGE help as well and greatly appreciated!
A huge shout out to Cheney, Will, Jason, Jim, Corrie and Luca…I can't wait to hear the album guys! :)

Scroll down for awesome photos of the band!
. . . . . .
Ciao amici! This Is How It Starts".

Rainy Day Brunching in NYC: The Butcher's Daughter

Website photo

It was a rainy day here in Viareggio…
It's been so hot and sunny that the sudden change caught me a bit off guard, but the cool air is rather refreshing…It reminds me of a particularly special Saturday spent in New York during my last visit in April…
Egidio and I spent a very sunny morning roaming around the Village, exploring quirky boutiques, discovering funky art galleries and shooting photos for a clothing brand. We were having a great time and wanted to savor each and every second of it as it was also the last day of our stay in NYC. Just as we both started to feel a bit hungry, we happened upon a lovely little vegetarian café called The Butcher's Daughter. We chose to sit outside at the cute wooden picnic tables and, as we sat there enjoying our meal, the sky turned cloudy and grey, the winds picked up and it started to rain. At this time, the outdoor seating was covered with scaffolding because they were doing construction work above the restaurant, so we were able to stay seated outside with the rain coming down all around us. It was wonderful!! We only decided to move inside the restaurant for our tea afterwards, as we started to get a bit cold. The indoor area is so bright and colorful that we were very happy to have had the experience of sitting inside as well. We chose a spot in the window so that we could sip our tea and continue to watch the rain. The staff was extremely friendly and gracious and made our meal really enjoyable. It was a lovely place to spend part of our afternoon and enjoy the rain from a warm, dry, happy spot… ;)

P.S. I tried the Egg Sandwich Platter: two scrambled eggs, cashew carrot cheese, avocado, kale, tomato jam on toasted 7-grain bread and served with roasted potato hash. Egidio ordered the same, but had his served as an open sandwich with poached eggs instead of scrambled.
After, we tried the Hot Golden Elixir tea: lemon, ginger, honey and echinacea.
Yum!
. . . . . . . . . .

Buonissimo!

.
They served water with fresh mint!
